Amid escalating global water challenges, Saudi Arabia and Senegal have urged the international community to enhance cooperation to tackle issues such as water scarcity, rising demand, and limited access to safe water. This call to action was made during a high-level event at the United Nations General Assembly, where Saudi Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Rassi, emphasized that water security is pivotal for international security, economic development, and community resilience.
Al-Rassi underscored that addressing the global water crisis involves more than just increasing water availability. He advocated for improved governance, technology, accessibility, and international collaboration. Saudi Arabia’s proactive measures in managing water scarcity were highlighted, including advancements in desalination, technological investments, and the implementation of its National Water Strategy 2030.
Senegal supported the call for prioritizing water in international policymaking, especially as water issues increasingly intersect with climate change, economic development, and social stability. The discussions underscored the significance of cooperation over shared water resources, with Senegal citing transboundary water management as a successful model for countries to jointly address common challenges.
Retno Marsudi, the UN’s special envoy on water, highlighted the slow progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on water and sanitation. She pointed out that millions globally still lack access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation, stressing the urgent need for stronger collective action.
Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia is set to host the 11th World Water Forum in March 2027, and Senegal will co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi alongside the UAE, signaling continued engagement and leadership in addressing global water issues.
