Trump Says Iran Was Behind American Deaths — and Still He’ll Offer a Deal

by admin477351

In one of the more striking passages of his State of the Union Address, President Trump accused Iran of being directly responsible for the deaths and injuries of thousands of American service members — and then said he is still willing to offer Tehran a path to a nuclear deal. The combination of accusation and openness reflects the complicated nature of the US-Iran relationship.

Trump said Iranian proxy forces have targeted American troops across the Middle East, calling the regime the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism. He also accused the Iranian government of killing approximately 32,000 of its own citizens during domestic protests and said US pressure had prevented additional executions.

Despite these accusations, Trump confirmed that active nuclear negotiations are underway and that the US is open to an agreement. His condition is that Iran publicly commit to never building a nuclear weapon — a declaration he called the “secret words” that would open the door to a deal.

Trump also described Iran’s advancing weapons programs, saying the country is developing missiles capable of reaching the United States and has resumed its nuclear activities following last year’s Operation Midnight Hammer strikes. He said these developments are being monitored closely and factor into US military planning.

His message was one of conditional openness: the US has grievances against Iran, some of them profound and personal, but is still willing to engage diplomatically if Tehran meets the fundamental condition Washington has set. The question is whether Iran is willing to make that commitment — and whether either side can trust the other enough to follow through.
