The United States has unveiled plans to impose tariffs of up to 100% on certain drones and their components, citing concerns over national security and a need to curb reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. The tariffs will specifically affect unmanned aircraft systems, with a particular focus on larger drones that weigh more than 25 kilograms and possess capabilities linked to national security, such as thermal imaging and docking stations. For these products, a 100% tariff will be applied, while smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
In addition to targeting Chinese imports, the U.S. will levy tariffs on drones and components originating from several key trading partners. Goods from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subjected to a 15% tariff, whereas those from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided that the hardware, software, and technology are sourced from the specified countries or the U.S. The majority of these tariffs are expected to be enforced starting September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to bolster the U.S. defense and industrial sectors, promote domestic drone manufacturing, and generate jobs within the country, all while reducing dependency on foreign suppliers. Currently, China holds a significant position in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI capturing a large portion of the U.S. commercial drone sector. DJI has already been subject to U.S. restrictions over concerns related to national security.
U.S. officials have expressed apprehensions that drones manufactured abroad could pose threats, including surveillance issues, sensitive data gathering, and potential attacks. The Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. The implementation of these tariffs occurs within the context of ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing, with China having also imposed export restrictions on drones to the U.S. and taken actions against various American companies.
