Iran has declared that its previously established framework agreement with the United States is now defunct, attributing this decision to perceived breaches by Washington. This announcement, reported by Iranian authorities, highlights Tehran’s stance as it seeks to maintain its defense posture amid a resurgence of regional hostilities.
Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi articulated Tehran’s position, emphasizing that the country had put a halt to the agreement. He pointed to the United States’ alleged shortcomings in meeting its obligations under the Islamabad declaration of intent, which had initially laid the groundwork for the framework.
Originally forged in mid-June, the framework agreement was intended to chart a course toward a sustainable resolution of hostilities between Iran and the United States. It outlined a timeline of 60 days for negotiating a comprehensive final agreement and included critical measures such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite the implementation of a ceasefire since early April, a flare-up in tensions occurred in early July, reigniting conflict and jeopardizing diplomatic efforts aimed at peace. This escalation has prompted Iranian officials to declare that the terms of the original agreement no longer bind Iran, effectively nullifying the prior understanding.
